Discussion 11

Some people feel that the public school system does not adequately prepare students for the real world.

Identify one improvement you think schools need to make in order to better prepare students for life after high school.

In approximately one hundred words, describe this improvement and explain why it is needed.

  1. Students can learn what they need here. How can you prepare someone for the 'real world'? The real world is tough. If an employer doesn't like you, you don't have a job. If there are cuts at the job, you don't have one either.
Things aren't just simple like they are in school. And there is no way for school to prepare us for things like that.
Your work is something that can change. If you're late once you get to college or at your job, there might not be that second chance or 10% off each day. If you're late that's it. You don't get a grade, you're in trouble.
Every person has to take the drive to prepare themselves and be ready. It shouldn't be all up to the school.

  2. If preparing us for the "real world" was something they really wanted to try to accomplish then every kid in high school ought to have some sort of job right now, regardless and be put through adult situations and fail or pass in that perspective. Also if schools going to be more like the real world, the only rules should be that of the actual law. Because in the real world, ASIDE from your job, there aren't dress codes, there's nobody to tell you what's right or wrong besides the actual government but for the most part it's up to you. Detentions would be more like jail, but you wouldn't get put in there for little stuff.. Because in real life, one little screw up doesn't neccessarily mean you get punsihed for it. No, you move on about your day. If this was suppose to be like real life, they could just keep picking favorites, because everyones in a competition somehow in the real world. Really, half the stuff I am learning I don't see me using much. Especially not in every subject. I'm not really being prepared to go out into the work force or have babies or get married or learn to manage my bills.. Yeah we're told these things are going to happen.. but not once have I ever had anything close to real life preparation because of school, its all been personal life experiences, and that's what they need to be teaching.

  3. i think that lunch should serve fancy gourmet meals i dont care how much it cost..idk what gourmet means pretty sure it has somthing to do with food. second! school shouuld be at night! I THINK THE STUDENTS DESERVE ALOT OF HOMEWORK STARTING NEXT YEAR!! accually iv changed my mind i think the school needs to cut back on the food they serve now and serve somthing cheaper and not give us so many options its really hard to pick wat i want. WE NEED MORE TEST. we need medal detectors at ever exit and everyone should give up all electronics expecially phones its school not txt time. we should get rid of bathrooms and use them as book closets and get rid of all sports and things like that! they need to stop trying to make school enjoyable ppl dont come to school for fun they come for learning 100 percent of the time everytime! sometimes when im in p.e i think hmm needs more READING!! i want the teachers to be more strict and if somone talks without permision they get a detention aand or expelled! last get rid of computers and tvs in here and cover all the windows and make it a little bit colder. and make the classes last alot longer...im done with school after this year but i know the other people still in school will apreciate all these things. :)

  4. I believe that school doesn't prepare you, they could definitely improve in that area. Im not saying that we should take away the basic needs classes such as Math, English/Reading, Science or Social Studies Im just saying that maybe it would be a good idea if upper class men were required to take some kind of money management class or something like that. Everybody will have to do taxes some day so why not incorporate a class along those lines. Like Taylor said the real world is tough, & I know as a Senior about to have to be in that situation its going to suck. School to me was a past time, really didn't learn anything useful for real life.. Skills classes such as Life Skills and Food and Nutrition do help. Im in Food and Nutrition and I've learned some things this year actually that I could use such as food borne illnesses and we are currently learning etiquette. But yes, Im obviously with those people who think school systems need improving.

  5. I feel like our school system gives us the opperatunity to strive (minus a few teachers)and learn to be prepared for our future. But that's just my opinion. I do think there could be plenty of improvement though. If we need to be prepared for college, then what should happen is that we get treated like college students. From each teacher I think a lesson could be learned. I love how suggs teaches, and how he tests. But I also like how in this class a lot of the stuff is independant. Also I like time limits, like in Mrs. Rich's class. If these aspects were all brought into each subject, I do believe I could do better. Maybe not in something like Chemistry, because obviously I suck at it, but in English, Spanish, Geometry, Digital Journalism....really everything, I think my knowledge would instantly increase. As of right now, me teaching the 6th graders has taught me more than almost anything during this entire school year. It has prepared me to actually become a better teacher and apply it not only to my life, but my future plans.

  6. Personally, I'm not sure that school systems are actually doing anything to really benefit kids. I think we need to have a greater spectrum of class levels, such as Remedial and Advanced classes. This way, there is a much greater chance that each student is getting the appropriate level of challenge and academic pressure. Also, "important" tests like the MAPS should be given more emphasis, if they should be given at all. If students are not given motivation to try on class assignment tests, they're probably not going to score as well. That aside, I'm not sure we should take as many tests as we do. After a while, the standardized testing gets too boring, and students are way less likely to perform well on them. Out in the workforce, it's probably not going to matter how many detentions you've earned, but what grades you've been given.

  7. Really schools these day are mostly focused on state testing and the image the school puts out, while this is important, it doesn't need to be an education system's main goal. It could be improved by making more levels of classes instead of shoving all of us with our different learning types into the same classroom with the hopes that we would learn at the same pace. It would only slow the advanced kids down while it helps the lower level students.

  8. I don't think school prepares you for the real world as much as it should. I think some electives such as life skills and child development do help you prepare for the real world because you learn things in those classes that you will need to know one day. I don't feel like tests do anything to prepare you for the real world because once you graduate and you're on your own you're not going to have to take a test or two every week. That's pretty much all I can think of off the top of my head.

  9. School doesn't prepare you for how things will be in the real world. It's definitely not unicorns and rainbows, it's pretty much nothing but a huge competition to see who can get to the top first. I think they need to try to prepare us for things like money management, etc. Like Ashley said, out in the real world there isn't going to be someone in front of you to tell you what to do and how to do it 24/7 like there is here. I believe some kind of improvement that would help prepare the students for this sort of thing would do a lot of good, as some students become too dependent on having someone to tell them how to do things. They need to learn to do it on their own.

  10. No I do not think school prepares you for the real world, I honestly dont think that everything we are being taught applys to the real world today. i never use any of the math honestly i know im never gonna add with letters and all that stupid stuff, but then agin i just suck at math, but i feel like we should learn about more current things in the world today. as well as history, but i just feel like we should learn whats happening today in our country, because i know jack diddly squat, hmm i dont know.

  11. The school doesn't prepare us for the real world. The school spoon feeds us and tells us how to do things instead of making u think for ourselves. Most people are dependent on their parents or adults or friends around them.
