Discussion 4 - Valentine's Day

Read the following information about Valentine's Day. What are your thoughts on the holiday? Was any of the information provided new or interesting to you? Do you think the holiday should be celebrated?

The Legend of St. Valentine
The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite?
The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Origins of Valentine's Day: A Pagan Festival in February
While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

Valentine's Day: A Day of Romance
Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”--at the end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine's Day. It was not until much later, however, that the day became definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages, it was commonly believed in France and England that February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season, which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine's Day should be a day for romance.
"Hallmark holiday" is a disparaging term, used predominantly in the United States, to describe a holiday that is perceived to exist primarily for commercial purposes, rather than to commemorate a traditionally significant event. The name comes from Hallmark Cards, a privately owned American company, that benefits from such manufactured events through sales of greeting card

  1. My thoughts on this holiday is it is AWESOME! but I guess I'm being biased because its my birthday. Otherwise I would probably say it was a waste of a holiday personally. Especially when you're single, it sucks! But luckily I don't have to worry about that this year ;)

  2. I think that everyone loves Valentines Day way too much. It is very commercial and profited from. I know that I've seen so many commercials about today trying to get you to buy things. They make you feel like you have to go spend lots of money just to make someone (who is supposed to love you anyway) love you. I don't think I would really be mad or offended if I didn't get anything for Valentines Day. I don't feel like somebody needs to spend their money on me for something like this. Just being with them should be good enough.
I guess that's just what I'm used to seeing.

  3. I knew that the idea for the Holiday was inspired by this guy but really ti was fully developed for commercial reasoning. I don't think a celebration should be disallowed but it makes me sick how commercialized and cheesy it has gotten. It used to be cute, but now it makes me sick. It's really a waste of money for most people. It's just too sappy and stupid to be taken seriously.

  5. I really like Valentines day. This didn't really change my views on it at all. But I never knew what it was really for. Any holiday, meaning or reason behind it or not, is a holiday to me. My family even gives me money or presents on valentines day.. So It's really a big thing in my family.. I've never known of anyone else to take it that way. But I always look forward to it. I mean we don't do anything too big or spend money on each other like we would on birthdays or christmas, but like my mom bought me some makeup and my nana got me a ton of candy and dad's giving me some money.. so yeah.. I like Valentines day for that purpose. I like it also because it's a day just dedicated to spending time with your boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband.. a day to do something special for each other.. and Relationships need that every once in a while. As for people not in a relationship, I wouldn't mope around.. use it as a time to be appreciative and show friends and family that you care for them as well.

  7. Of all, I think the last option is the most true. If there ever was a "hallmark holiday", the first thing that pops into my head is Valentine's Day. Hallmark does make a large profit off of said holiday, but let's not forget the annoying repetition of "EVERY KISS BEGINS WITH KAY" that's beamed into our homes by every major network at this time every year. The jewelry companies also make a fortune from those "OMG ITS FEB 13TH" husbands who just have to get their wifey something with a rock in it, and God help us all if frivolous things like traffic laws get in their way.

On a related note, YOU SHOULD HAVE WENT TO JARED'S.

  8. Honestly, Valentines day is one of the worst days for me. It isn't because of the lack of attention i got, it isn't because I wanted roses and didn't get them, don't get me wrong roses are gorgeous flowers, but not just for one day. I think every day should be valentines day if you're in a relationship. Everyone should be treated in a way that shows their significant other cares. Spending money isn't what it's about, first of all. It SHOULD be celebrated by those who cherish each other, not some random 'hook up' on a day just to get flowers, and get closer than they probably should. "HE WENT TO JARED<3" makes me want to die. My best friend died on valentines day last. I haven't had anyone special to me since then, and when people rub it in my face what day it is, it just makes me cry. So...this is why i don't think that valentines day should be celebrated

  9. Valentines day to me, is to show your boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband that you appreciate them. If you're single, nobody wants to hear about how bad you hate it, quit moping and show the others around you that you appreciate them, don't try to ruin everyone else mood because you don't have somebody to celebrate it with. Personally, I love valentines day.

  10. COOL FACTS... I think that the people that don't enjoy Valentines Day are the ones that haven't received love from a significant other and to me thats sad. But on the other hand it might be because Im deeply in love these days and my Valentines Day was awesome this year. But at the same time, it s a kind of stupid holiday. about love really? I feel like the media and society in general like to fantasize Valentines Day to much. All lovey dovey kind of stuff. Its not all about being in relationships and chocolate and roses.. I believe its a holiday that is about showing love to everybody around you not just your spouse or what not. There is nothing wrong with showing love, I think that the world needs more love these days..Maybe we should have more Valentines Days :) <3
